  • The Art of 1990s DJ Mixtapes

The Art of 1990s DJ Mixtapes

Back in the nineties, when I started to DJ, making a mixtape meant recording straight onto cassette tape. It was recorded straight from vinyl with just two turntables, a mixer, and a tape deck. Cassette tapes were usually 30 or 45 minutes per side (C60, C90). I never used the C120 that had 60 minutes per side. I’m not sure why, looking back. I think the audio quality wasn’t as good. I might be wrong about this, it is 30 years ago. Although you could record both sides of a tape, there was a gap in the middle. This occurred when the tape changed sides, either automatically or manually. So you really only had 30 or 45 minutes to craft a compelling mix. I recently fell back in love with that idea: getting a story across in just 30 to 45 minutes. I am planning to record some home “taped” mixes regularly (aiming for one a week), the first one is online already on my Mixcloud:

  • Chilled House and Nu Disco Mix: Listen Now

Chilled House and Nu Disco Mix: Listen Now

I archive all my mixes on my Mixcloud, which mainly contains live and longer (2 to 5 hour) mixes. I recently put a short (30-45 minute) mix on my Soundcloud and am planning to make that a regular thing. I haven’t decided if it will be weekly or monthly or something in between. Anyway, my first of those shorter mixes is here for you to enjoy. It was meant to be a chilled house and nu disco set. Still, I think I got quite excited, and the energy levels did go up. šŸ˜‰ Hope you enjoy! Don’t forget to leave a comment on Soundcloud if you do!

  • Online DJ courses

    Online DJ courses

It kinda feels weird to take an online DJ course after 30 years of real world experience, but I must say, the few courses I completed on digitaldjtips.com have really helped me. A lot of stuff I learned instinctively (like beat counting and phrase mixing) but there is always more to learn. I think the most important for me has been to get excited about DJ’ing again and feeling like I am progressing, not just doing the same thing I have been doing. And with digital DJ’ing there are a lot of tips and tricks that might have taken me a long time to pick up otherwise. So, yeah, definitely five stars, would recomend!

Deep South Vinyl Grooves pt 2

I thoroughly enjoyed playing another vinyl only DJ set yesterday at Deep South Vinyl Grooves at Camel Rock. I forgot to post about it here beforehand, sorry about that, just been a bit busy with being a non-binary parent and preparing a DJ set and a party and with life in general. Unfortunately the recording I tried to make didn’t work, so this one won’t be on Mixcloud, that’s immediacy for you.
